What makes poker even more popular in the casino world is that it offers a lot of variants players can choose from. Depending on the skill level and preferred game pace, there are several variations that players can opt to play.

One popular variant is three card poker. Also known as  ‘Tri-card Poker’. This game features fast-paced gameplay with a lower house advantage. It also has side bonus wagers that have competitive odds.

Its origin dates back in the late 90s. According to accounts, the game was created by a player named Dereck Webb, an avid poker player from Las Vegas Nevada. After the game gained popularity, Webb had it patented in 1997.

The goal of the game is to create a version of poker with faster gameplay. To attract players, Webb combined three factors that sealed the deal for three card poker. These being uncomplicated mechanics, high payouts, and a house edge that made it appealing to casino owners and players alike.

Three card poker: How it works

Learning three card poker is easy. If you’re a beginner and you want to try out poker for the first time, this game is a good choice to get you started.

  • The game begins with players placing an ante wager or a pair plus wager.
  • Once the wagers are set, the dealer will deal the cards face down to each player, including themselves. In this game, you are only playing against the dealer.
  • Both the dealer and players’ cards are dealt face down.
  • After assessing the strength of their hand, players can choose to Bet or Fold.
  • Once all the players have revealed their cards, the dealer shows their hand. The cards must have a ‘Queen High’ or better to continue playing.
  • If the hand that the dealer features a Jack high or lower, the ante will be returned to the player. However, if the dealer has a Queen-high or better in their hand, the players’ wager and the ante will be divided 1 to 1. This will only happen if a player has a better hand than the dealer.
  • If the dealer has a superior hand, the ante and player bets will be collected.

Here are some of the most effective three card poker tips:

Pair plus odds

A pair plus odds is a three card poker secret that requires you to have a pair, flush or a three of a kind. You can also use a straight flush. For this strategy, you have to note that flushes appear more compared to  straights. That’s why a straight combination has more payout potential than  flushes do.

Below are some of the combinations  you can try, depending on the hand you have:

Hand

Example

Straight flush

7, 8, 9 of diamonds

Three of a kind

10 10  ♠10

10 of hearts, 10 of clubs, 10 of spades

Straight

6 ♠7 8

6 of diamonds, 7 of spades, 8 of hearts

Flush

3

King of hearts, 9 of hearts, 3 of hearts

Ante-play odds and strategy

The Ante-play odds is a strategy that can help you defeat the dealer’s hand. As mentioned earlier, if the dealer doesn’t have a Queen-high or better, the dealer won’t play. However, if he has a Queen or better, you must have a better hand in order to win. Here are some things you need to remember when  using the Ante-play strategy:

  • If you and the dealer have the same highest card, you can break the tie with the second-highest card.
  • If your highest and second-highest card is the same, the third-highest will even out the cards.
  • If all the cards you have are similar, the game will be considered a tie and your initial stake will be returned.

Below are some examples of hands that you may come across.

Dealer’s hand

Player Hands

Winner

K ♠Q ♣9

King of diamonds, Queen of spades, 9 of clubs

♣A 7 ♠3

King of clubs, 8 of spades, 7 of clubs

Q ♠10 4

Queen of diamonds, 10 of spades, 4 of hearts

The dealer wins because the King has a higher value than the Queen.

♠Q ♣10 3
