Although the image of a pirate these days is seen as something desirable, be assured that the reality of being a pirate of the past was far from pleasant. Bad conditions, months at sea and loss of limbs. Microgaming love a challenge, so have endeavoured to create a cheerful take on the theme of piracy with their slot Skull Duggery.
Presented over a 5x3 setup with a modest 9 paylines, this game brings a certain playfulness to the harsh realities of life on the high seas. Bold symbols spin on large wooden reels, with an expanse of water as a backdrop, all accompanied by a soundtrack of sloshing and pirates’ ooh-ing and argh-ing in the background. Some rudimentary beeping also finds its way into the soundtrack, and God knows what they mean.
Looks like trouble ahead
Symbols in the game are related nicely to the overall theme, you’ll find coconuts, bananas, oranges, grapes, mangoes, a beer stein, a treasure map and the red-bearded pirate captain. These cover all values of winnings.
The wild comes in the form of a Skull Duggery logo but has limited power in comparison to other wilds found across online slots. This one will only substitute for the fruit to make winning paylines, but these wins do get tripled to kame it worthwhile. The bonus symbol is a thief half-inching a treasure chest, with the scatter appearing as a pile of money topped by a green skull.
The bonuses to mention
Although the name suggests something rather exciting, the reality is less to shout about. This feature doesn’t really last all that long and gets triggered by having three or more of the thief bonus symbols across an active payline.
The game advances to show you five shipmates on deck, all looking a little worse for wear. Your task is to decide which to dump into the sea, plank style we can only guess. You’ll get a cash prize for your chosen pirate, the amount of which is based in part on how many bonus symbols triggered the feature; three, four or five. We recommend playing the maximum amount of lines you can to ensure this feature drops.
Skull Duggery is a nicely designed slot with some entertaining graphics and sound effects. It does look a little aged at times, as things have moved on a fair bit in this space of late. Gameplay is slick though for its age, and the RTP of 95.80% is tidy enough for those that love the theme enough to spend an evening on.
