Known for their catalogue of Asian-themed video slots, Skywind have brought us games based on a range of Chinese legends and astrology. Their latest offering, the Legend of Hou Yi adds to that strong stable with an exciting yet somewhat limited slot.
Presented over the standard 5x3 setup with a tasty 243 ways to win, this 50-coins-a-spin slot takes you into the mythological world of Hou Yi, with coin values ranging from 0.01 to 5.00 with a sizeable maximum bet of 250.00 on each spin. Legend has it that during an eclipse Hou Yi saved the moon with only a bow and arrow, freeing China of nine golden suns that scorched the land, along with the odd monster and dragon too.
Win big with those arrows
As is typical of all themed slots the high-value symbols are the main symbols of the theme. Hou Yi's golden shield pays the most, get three, four, or five matching symbols on adjacent reels from left-to-right to win with this one. Golden crow symbols pay 100 coins for three, 250 coins for four, and 1,500 coins for five.
A symbol that is ever-present in Chinese mythology is the Sanzuwu, or the three-legged crow. Paying between 50-1000 coins out, with the actual amount dependent on the number of symbols you get over adjacent reels. Hou Yi’s helmet, the magic potion, his bow and arrow along with the scroll pay 40-1000, 35-800, 30-500 and 25-500 coins respectively.
The lower-value symbols are a predictable range from the playing card deck, as is typical on video slot these days. Symbols from 9 to Ace make up the range. Payouts are level with what you might expect for an average 243-ways slot, but of course you’re aiming for those bigger wins. Hou Yi acts as the game’s wild.
That lovely gold feature can push up the wins
There are a few nice bonuses here, one we particularly like is the golden games feature. Get the golden background symbol across reels 1,2,4 or 5, appearing behind the existing symbols. When this happens, that symbol will pay on every position within that reel.
Although you can see that this golden background feature doesn’t generally appear on reel three, it actually can. Trigger the golden games round by landing three Hou Yi archer symbols down reel 3, this will also activate 5 golden free spins. The Hou Yi symbol then expands the fill the reel, locking into place for the feature’s entire duration. The gold feature will trigger for all golden games, making those difficult to reach background symbols come into clearer focus and easier to land on reel three.
On top of being notoriously difficult to trigger, this feature can’t be retriggered either. This does let the game down a bit, as we see no reason why this couldn’t be the case. For decent wins you’ll have to get the most out of the appearances of this feature, and as it’s the only feature to speak of that makes for a stressful and potentially pointless experience. Free spins can be triggered by getting three scatters across the middle reels 2, 3 and 4 for 10 games and a 2x total bet prize.
Pushing the territory of the high-limits slots, Legacy of Hou Yi, a high-variance game has a decent set of features, but the fact that they are so hard to trigger and not able to be retriggered, makes the whole thing a little futile. It’s a shame, because visuals and theme are nice.
