There was once a television show from China that will spark a flame of recognition for some of you, the show was called Monkey, a story of the Gods and the pilgrimages those who have faith are prepared to embark on. Pragmatic Play’s slot Journey to the West is very loosely, but unashamedly, based on this TV show’s theme.
Presented over the standard 5 x 3 setup with 25 fixed paylines, Journey To The West features typical symbols like paper lanterns swinging gently in the breeze, a rather grand looking structure that holds the reels and rather tastefully chosen Chinese style music to bind all of these elements together.
You’ll find the higher value symbols here in the form of the characters of the show, Monkey, Tripitaka, Pigsy and Sandy - not that they blatantly admit it. Lower value symbols within the game are represented by four Chinese characters, the meaning of which we cannot be sure enough to report.
The wild in the game comes in the form of a golden word ‘Wild’ against a jade green background, the symbols replace all others to help you form wins, except for the scatter symbol.
The bonus that’s really quite fun
Feeling rather solitary on its own here, the free spins feature is triggered by getting three or more gold and green Free Spins scatter symbols anywhere across the reels. Initially you’ll receive five free spins, however, you could earn three more. This could be done indefinitely by getting three more scatters repeatedly during this round; even if a little unlikely.
You’ll have the task of selecting one of the four characters or the wild symbol before the spins start, the latter to be stacked during the spins feature, also coming with a multiplier of up to 5x your win, relatively.
There’s not really a lot to dislike about Journey To The West, it’s a strange one. We find ourselves having trouble saying both good and bad things about it, it’s certainly playable and even a touch addictive. As for Pragmatic Play’s offering, graphics-wise it’s pretty striking and sound-wise too. Mix all this up with an RTP of 96.47%, and you have yourself a very valid way to spend an evening and your cash.
