There are a handful of themes that just work on the video slot industry, and pirates is one of them. They always bring a certain ragged charm to the screen. Microgaming’s Loose Cannon is one of many slots adopting this theme but seems to balance the chaos of the imagery and playability very well.
Presented over the classic 5x3 format with 243 ways to win, the game requires the player to get matching symbols in adjacent reels (starting from the left hand side) in order to win on a spin, it’s a nice way calculating it, but the jury is out as to whether it makes for an easier ride.
The look and feel of the game
The pirate theme is nicely executed and relies on a range of well-rendered symbols and backgrounds. Higher value symbols include a brace of pistols, some rum, a treasure map, a treasure chest, a monkey with a cannonball, pirates of both sexes and the Loose Cannon logo.
The wild in this game comes in the form of a pirate ship, replacing all other symbols to form wins, apart from the scatter. Speaking of scatters, this game has a compass and octopus scatter that activates the main feature in the game.
The bonuses that bring the cash
Land the pirate ship wild on reel three and see it stack across the entire reel, the ships launching into a firing frenzy, showering a burst of cannonballs into the air. When these cannonballs land on other reel positions they become wild, triggering a re-evaluation of the win on the reels. You should see an increase in your win here, resulting in a nice fat payout.
The free spins feature is trigger by the scatter appearing across reels 1, 3 and 5. When this happens, you’ll get 15 free spins. On top of this all resulting wins can form either way, boosting your winning probability. You can retrigger the feature as it runs if further scatters appear over the reels.
Loose Cannon looks nice and performs ever better. The theme is bang on with the imagery of the genre and the gameplay and soundtrack contribute to the overall pirate vibe. The bonus features are a welcome addition, though to be honest the free spins took some work to trigger, much more of a challenge that the stacked wilds. This is unfortunate, as it’s the free spins you’ll be playing this game for.
