Old Skool Studios are relatively unknown to players, and certainly not one of the large recognisable names. Here with La Rouge, however, they have produced something that not only gives the bigger names a run for their money but beats some of them on a range of points from graphics to mechanics and prizes.
Presented over the standard 5x3 setup with 20 fixed paylines, this slot takes you back to what feels like wartime era America. There is a wonderful atmosphere about the game, as often happens with any story or theme shaped around similar themes. Set against the backdrop of a city street somewhere in the U.S., with focus on the stage and show business in general and peppered with dodgy-looking bars and having a general fledgeling night scene feel.
The symbolism of the time
Higher value symbols are theme related, and consist of a contemporary looking telephone, a bunch of red roses, a microphone and a vinyl record. The lower value symbols include some nicely rendered hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs.
The wild in the game comes in the form of a Monroe-esque girl with red lipstick, surrounded by dressing room lights. She replaces all other symbols to form wins, she won’t work on the male character and the clapperboard scatters.
The bonuses that make the game special
Activated when you get three, four or five ‘male character’ scatters in any position across the reels. You’ll get 8, 12 or 20 free spins respectively. There will also be an increased multiplier selected at random before the round. You’ll find extra stacked wilds on the reels and the ability to trigger further spins from within the feature by getting more character scatters across the reels.
This feature can be activated by getting three clapperboard scatters in any position across reels one, three and five. This triggers a multi-stage selection game, bringing with it cash prizes, level advances and ‘win all’ rewards. You can collect your winnings and exit this feature at any time by pressing ‘collect’.
No one can resist the lure of the gamble feature, but we always encourage caution with these. You can gamble any wins you get by pressing on the dice at the bottom of the screen. Choose from the red or black stars in an attempt to double your money. As we all know too well, you can lose the lot at this point so be careful.
Atmospheric lighting and a soundtrack to compliment it make La Rouge a treat on the senses, and with an RTP of 95.02% it is a contender on the winning side. As we have found there is never a slot that has it all, there is always a balance to be found. But it’s when that balance is workable that we really recommend a slot, and we think that here Old Skool Studios have got it just right.
