How to play live dealer baccarat

An absolute staple of casinos in towns and cities across the globe and, of course, online.

Baccarat was believed to have been first founded at some point in the 18th century, and it has retained its popularity to this day.

It has been played by all manner of characters through the years, including James Bond, who found the time in Casino Royale to take the dealer to the cleaners in-between saving the world and romancing a bevy of beautiful women. Nice work, if you can get it.

The good news is that you don’t need to be an international man of mystery to enjoy baccarat. There are three main types of the card game played worldwide: Punto Banco, the version typically enjoyed in casinos in the Western world, Chemmy - or ‘baccarat chemin de fer’ to give its original French name, and Banque (à deux tableaux).

Here at Bitcasino you can try your hand at ten different baccarat variants, which are available to play for free or for real money.

There is also an exciting range of live dealer baccarat titles to try, which combine the fun and strategy of the French game with the adrenaline-rush of playing against a live dealer. You can enjoy the glamour and sophistication of the casino without even needing to leave your living room!

What is live dealer baccarat?

As you may or may not know, baccarat is a game where the player and the dealer go head to head to see who wins the pot, based upon who has the stronger hand.

So, naturally, it's also a game that lends itself to the live dealer arena. In the live dealer baccarat games offered by Bitcasino, it’s you versus the house, with the winner taking all.

The dealer hands out the cards, and you decide upon your wagers and place them by using the on-screen instructions. You can watch the action unfold in sublime HD quality on your laptop, smartphone or tablet, and interact with the dealer using the messenger system. You can hear their replies too.

It’s a fantastic way to learn how to play the game from friendly, experienced dealers, as you can ask questions as you go. Once you have gotten the hang of it, you can even play for real money courtesy of BitCasino.

The rules of live dealer baccarat?

In live dealer baccarat, the dealer is in control of several decks of cards, which are kept in ‘the shoe’. It’s important to note that more than one deck is used, as this prevents players from picking up on patterns and counting cards.

Both the player and the dealer have a hand, and the object is to land a total numerical value as close to nine as possible – but never exceeding it.

From a betting perspective, all you have to do is bet on yourself or the banker… or if you think the hands will result in a tie.

Then, two cards are dealt to the player and two to the dealer, and upon reveal, the winner is the hand closest to value of nine. It really is that straightforward.

So, how are the points counted up? As you might expect, the numbers on the cards reflect their points, although there are special rules for the picture cards, such as jack, queen and king.

All picture cards count as zero and if the accumulation of points is more than ten, then the left-hand number is dropped. For instance, if your total points score is 17 from your cards, then the ‘1’ is dropped to leave you with a score of seven.

What about the third card in live dealer baccarat?

Some variants of baccarat can continue to a third card, and the rules for this are outlined below.

·       If your (or the dealer’s) initial hand is worth less than five points, you/they will be dealt a third card automatically.

·       If the dealer’s total is two, he/she will draw another.

·       If the dealer’s total is three, he/she will draw another unless your third card is an eight.

·       If the dealer’s total is four, he/she will draw another unless your third card is a zero (a picture card), one, eight or a nine.

·       If the dealer’s total is five, he/she will draw another if your third card is a four, five, six or seven.

·       If the dealer’s total is six, he/she will draw another if your third card is a six or a seven.

·       If the dealer’s total is seven, then he/she will stand (as in hold their cards, not stand up from the table!).

Are there side bets in live dealer baccarat?

Yes, there are! As well as just betting on the standard one vs one action as you go toe-to-toe with the dealer, you can also take advantage of a number of side betting opportunities with live dealer baccarat.

There are five additional bets you can place: Player Pair, Banker Pair, Either Pair, Perfect Pair and Big or Small.

As you might expect, the Player Pair and Banker Pair side bet wins when the two cards dealt to either contestant are a pair.

Either Pair wagers win when you or the banker lands a pair, you don’t need to specify who, while a Perfect Pair is formed when either the player or the dealer lands a pair of the same suit in their opening hand.

The Big pays when the total of the player and the dealer’s cards is five or six, while the Small is a winner when the same total is four.

These tips and tricks should help you understand the basics of live dealer baccarat. Feel free to bookmark the page for reference. Why not try your hand with your newly gained knowledge of live dealer baccarat here at Bitcasino.
