A quick guide to the League of Legends ranking system

Out of all the games in the esports industry, there is no doubt that League of Legends (LoL) is among the most popular online games ever since it was released in 2009. Commonly known as League, it is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) developed by Riot Games. Since it is a well-known game in the industry, several gamers are wondering about the LoL ranking system.

LoL’s free-to-play gameplay is one of the reasons why it stood out to players the most. This simply means that you can play the game without paying any amount. LoL is monetized through its purchasable characters, skins, and weapons.

League of Legends is played by two teams of five players in a player vs player (PvP) combat. What’s exciting is that each player controls a character known as ‘champion’ equipped with a wide range of play styles and unique abilities.

The players can increase the damaging powers of their champion by collecting experience points, earning gold, and buying deadly weapons or items. The victory goes to the team that successfully defeats all of the enemies and destroys the Nexus, the tower within the base of each team. The winning team levels up through the League of Legends ranking system.

Aside from its exciting gameplay, LoL was highly praised for its character designs, production value, and accessibility. As a matter of fact, short stories, music videos, spin-off games, and even animated series were created.

With its popularity, LoL is recognized among the world’s largest esports with 12 leagues played internationally. Since LoL plays a huge role in the esports industry, several players want to know more about the game’s ranking system.

How does the ranking work?

LoL’s ranking is often referred to as the League system. It is the process of matching players with similar skill levels to play against or together. To make the game more challenging, LoL’s ranking has nine tiers which are used to indicate the skill level of the players. Each division is also ranked through a point system also known as the League Points or LP. With this, the standings of each player can be easily monitored.

The nine tiers are then divided into four divisions. One is the highest tier while four is the lowest. To level up through each division and tier, you need to earn LP as much as you can. The points you have collected are determined by the Matchmaking Rating (MMR).

If you win against a team with a higher MMR, you’ll earn more LP. The losing team will still receive LP but not the same amount as the winning team. Keep in mind that you’ll lose LP if you are continuously on a losing streak. The amount of LP subtracted depends on your MMR and your opponents.

Your division and tier determine your official rank at the end of each ranked season. If you rank up, you’ll earn in-game rewards such as special skills that you can use to defeat your opponent. However, the amount you’ll win depends on the tier you finished in.

LoL ranking you should know

The first six tiers of League are divided into four divisions each while the three final tiers are not. Players start as an Iron level and progresses up the system by gathering enough points. Here are the nine tier ranking of LoL:

  • Iron
  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond
  • Master
  • Grandmaster
  • Challenger

Most of the time, players find themselves in Silver and Gold. This only proves how challenging it is to progress in LoL. To reach Platinum or higher tier rankings, it is best to focus on a small number of heroes and watch out for the meta-changing nerfs and buffs to elevate your LoL game.

One of the best ways to move up the tiers is to win games in a best-of-series. It can be 5 games for tier moves or 3 games for division jumps. This ranking system is referred to as the LoL Ranking Ladder.

Here are the different skill levels:

  • Average - Iron IV to Gold I (0–90 percentile)
  • Skilled - Platinum IV to Diamond III (90–99.5 percentile)
  • Elite - Diamond II to Challenger (99.5–100 percentile)
  • Pro - Top 5 Pro Regions

Promotion and demotion

You need to maintain a total of 100 LP to advance through divisions. If no LP is subtracted to your next loss, you’ll experience a division regress. Your LP is then reset to 75.

When it comes to the promotion process, you need to play a set of games and win to move into the next tier. One of these is the promotion series wherein you need to win 3 out of 5 matches. If you win, your division will move up with LP reset to 0.

Demotion happens when you are in the lowest division. To save you from greater loss, the Tier-loss protection will be activated for you to render LP instead of a direct demotion. But if you are demoted, your LP will reset to 25 or 75. The Tier-loss protection won’t be activated if you are in a decay-induced demotion.

The fun of playing League

Whether you are playing for leisure or professionally, you’ll always find the fun of playing LoL. In fact, the satisfaction of climbing up the League of Legends ranking system is one of the reasons why you should be coming back for more. Who knows? You might reach the highest tier in the LoL ranking system and play in the apex tier system wherein the most skilled gamers compete or have the chance to be invited to join a professional team once you reach the Challenger tier solo or duo.
