Underdog victories: Top wins against all odds in esports history

Any competitive arrangement like esports will measure its participants by skill level relative to everyone else. It is further simplified using a ranking system fit to measure millions of players in each region so the game can relegate them only to match with others of their calibre.

The professional scene has a different metric when it comes to measuring participants. As soon as you qualify for the tournament, your skills are measured alongside everyone on the roster.

It creates a fun and competitive matchup between a veteran and a newcomer. Everyone in the tournament earned a place there, but there will always be an underdog and a favourite.

It opens the opportunity for fascinating stories of teams winning against all odds, either in a single match or the whole tournament. Here are some cases of when esports underdogs win despite an unfavourable matchup:

What is the biggest upset in esports history?

The word ‘upset’ in esports refers to events where the favourite loses or ties with the underdog. Every tournament will have this kind of outcome for at least less than half of all its matches.

This frequency paired with how high the payout is makes underdog betting a popular activity at Bitcasino. Though relatively uncommon, some upsets are just so great they become hot topics in esports forums. Here are two of those stories:

SG Esports, biggest betting underdogs who won vs Team Secret

Most teams in the 2022 League of Legends Champions Series (LCS 2022) have large organisations backing them. The more prominent names are typically the favourites in most matchups because they have a long history of winning championship titles. Some underdog esports League of Legends teams can disband every season or get hired as an academy team for a more significant organisation. Additionally, some esports teams can be enormous in their country or server but be unheard of by foreign competitors.

SG Esports is one such team because they have a big name in South America but are unknown in the LCS Summer Split. They were up against Team Secret, one of the most feared teams in the series.

SG was one of the underdog esports teams in the tournament, but they managed to win a 2-1 upset, eliminating Team Secret from the LCS, one of the most feared teams there. While SG was eventually defeated by Evil Geniuses right after, it’s still an inspiring day for spectators betting on underdogs.

Evil Geniuses sweep with 3-1 vs Team Liquid at the LCS 2022

Evil Geniuses is one of the world’s most prominent esports organisations, but Team Liquid is a force to be reckoned with in the LCS 2022 Spring Split. Since the start of the season, fans and punters expected the latter to win. They also started the hashtag trend ‘#TLWIN’ in anticipation that they would dominate the LCS.

Besides Team Liquid’s loss to 100 Thieves at the start, they dominated best of five (Bo5) matches until they faced Evil Geniuses in the playoffs. The underdog esports League of Legends team won with a 3-1 upset, and fans call it a ‘free win’ because of the big difference in scores.

How some underdogs shot to fame quickly

Matchups between underdog and favourite are the best way for a relatively unknown competitor to be in the spotlight quickly. Sometimes this means more considerable respect from spectators on social media platforms or more opportunities in the future. Here are two of the best stories of when underdogs shot to fame in one tournament:

JKS: The ultimate CS:GO stand-in

The North American server is one of the most competitive environments for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) esports. It is where most of the world’s most prominent organisations invest, so Australian pro gamer Justin ‘jks’ Savage is adamant about joining.

However, his 100 Thieves team had to disband because of technical difficulties barring Australian servers from playing with North American teams. He moved to Complexity, but they had a dismal season in 2020. JKS is a formidable player and is arguably the best in the Australian server, but he was never given a good team, forcing him to carry hard in every match. He is left offering his service as a stand-in for any team in NA.

Fortunately, FaZe Clan extended their hand to JKS and made him a stand-in at the IEM Katowice 2022. It allowed JKS to show his skills with solid allies to back him up. None of the spectators and analysts expected much from him since FaZe Clan’s Russel ‘Twistzz’ Van Dulken had faith in him. What ends up happening is that JKS became the MVP that won FaZe Clan the 2022 IEM title. This feat boosted his fame, and he got offers to join the European server.

Team Spirit: Toppling giants in Dota 2

Esports underdog betting outrights odds were high for Team Spirit in 2021 The International (TI10). They are a relatively unknown organisation from Russia in a tournament filled with veterans and top-rated Dota 2 pro players.

Team Spirit started the season on a sour note with a subpar performance at the group stage, and Invictus Gaming relegated them immediately to the lower brackets. However, they won against Fnatic and OG in a 2-0 upset, beat Virtus.pro 2-1, and then won a rematch vs Invictus Gaming 2-0. They also won against two of the favourites in TI10 in the semi-finals and finals, Team Secret and PSG.LGD respectively.

Which underdogs are worth betting on?

It’s fun to bet on underdogs because of their high payout, but some matchups will inevitably end in losses. To avoid this, here are three of the best underdogs you can wager on in their next match:

DetonatioN FocusMe: The Dark Horse from Japan

Japan has always been among the weaker regions for League of Legends esports, lacking notable pro players and wavering organisations. However, DetonatioN FocusMe performed well recently, qualifying for the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational (MSI 2022).

Unfortunately, they didn’t qualify past the group stage but winning once against Team Aze from Latin America (LATAM) is impressive enough. Detonation FocusMe will have been the underdog in almost every matchup, so backing them will always have a high payout.

Leviatán: Tenacious newcomers from Argentina

VALORANT is a new esport with a significant international tournament only having run two seasons, 2021 and 2022. However, the LATAM server is already considered among the most formidable regions, thanks to its immense appreciation for first-person shooters (FPS).

Leviatán is among the esports teams in Argentina struggling not because they are weak but because of how competitive the LATAM server is. They lost their spot for the VALORANT Champions Tour in 2021 but managed to nab a seed in 2022. Leviatán is a strong team relative to servers and has shown promising performances versus big organisations like Fnatic and Evil Geniuses

Alliance: Slow and steady Swede team

Unlike the other two esports teams, Alliance performs relatively better in the Apex Legends esports scene. The Swedish team had a bad season in 2021 but made their comeback at the Split 2 Pro League.

They are underdogs because of their slow rise to joining the major leagues. Alliance still has difficulty training because of a lack of scrimmages, but they managed to dominate on the tournament's opening day.
